Founder of The Ladders Identifies 4 Steps to Take to Land a Job in AI – Forbes

As the third article designed to help people interested in AI land a job, this article includes insight from Marc Cenedella, founder of Leet Resumes and The Ladders, and author of seven Amazon Careers #1 bestsellers. In earlier articles, Canadella provides insight on the two types of roles available in AI and the ways in which people can demonstrate interest in AI. In this article, Canadella identifies four steps that can help marketers get a job in AI.

4 Steps To Get a Job in AI

1. Marketing professionals should demonstrate that they are putting in the time and effort to become experts. Practice daily with the AI tools available to you. Prove to prospective employers that you have curiosity, capacity, and capability. Demonstrate that you’re reading newsletters in the field, keeping up with research on Large Language Models (like ChatGPT), and engaging in online forums.

2. Create a portfolio of interesting examples that you’ve created. The best way to impress a potential employer is to demonstrate how you can use AI to benefit them. If you don’t have examples from your current workplace, it’s ok to design a make believe example campaign. You could also work with a nonprofit organization to create an AI-based campaign and share that in your portfolio. In the portfolio presentation, include data projections on how your work could save resources or increase revenue.

3. Compare and understand various AI services. Many applicants will have dabbled in ChatGPT. You can make yourself stand out by understanding other services. Compare AI tools like Anthropic, Cohere, and Perplexity. Make sure you can explain that you understand the differences in capabilities and output and how you would use each one to help a potential employer reach goals.

4. It’s also important to update your resume and cover letter. Many people are attempting to use ChatGPT for this. That is a mistake. ChatGPT is a generic Large Language Model. Generic models produce generic results. Your resume is not the place to be average. Standout AI resumes require specialized AI tools. A free AI-based resume writing service like Leet Resumes (leet.co) guides you through the process step-by-step (you don’t even have to try to figure out good resume writing prompts). It will create a resume and cover letter that sets you apart from other applicants so you can get that new job faster and easier than ever before.
